Into the Sky Directors on Sam Richardson, Blue Goo, and the Hail Mary | Fantastic Fest 2026

amfmstudios - AMFM Magazine October 2, 2026 2:49 pm

James Cullen Bressack wanted a movie in Fantastic Fest at eighteen. It took fifteen years. He is back in Austin with I Have Proof, a 77-minute VHS horror he wrote and directed, and the first horror title he has brought to the festival.

AMFM Magazine’s Paul Salfen talks with Bressack, lead and director of photography Larsen Deane, Lilly Van der Meer, and B.J. Hendricks about going back to a crew of five and a camcorder after movies with Mel Gibson, Bruce Willis, and Jean-Claude Van Damme. They get into the scene that only counted once two people threw up, a Mother’s Day cover story told in latex gloves, and why the advice for the next Fantastic Fest surprise is simple: believe in the story, say yes, and be kind to the people you work with.

Alex has proof. He needs you to see it. I Have Proof is a psychological descent where reality is never quite what it seems.

World premiere: Fantastic Fest, September 21, 2026, 5 p.m. CT, Austin
Written and directed by James Cullen Bressack

At 45, the last thing she expected was expecting.

AMFM Magazine Managing Editor Paul Salfen sits down with writer, director, and producer Beth Caulfield for an exclusive conversation about CONCEIVABLE, the faith-forward drama inspired by her own true story. A respected minister, wife, and mother of two nearly grown kids sees her next chapter upended by an unplanned pregnancy — and has to decide what faith, responsibility, and courage look like when the plan falls apart.

CONCEIVABLE opens in select theaters October 16, 2026, from Hawk Hill Pictures.

Caulfield did not set out to make a documentary. She set out to tell the story with the warts left on — and to start the conversations people are usually afraid to have. In this interview she talks about the moment she thought she would wake up, the forgotten dream of writing movies, stepping out of the pulpit to finance the film, working with co-director and star Jana Lee Hamblin, and the verse that keeps her pointed at an audience of one.

Starring Jana Lee Hamblin (The West Wing), Eddie McClintock, Dean Cain, Daniel Roebuck, Wendy Griffith, Camille Joy, and Preston Howell. Directed by Beth Caulfield and Jana Lee Hamblin. Written and produced by Beth Caulfield. A People Throw Rocks At Things That Shine production.

Official selection, 2024 Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival. 2025 Tokyo Women Film Festival semifinalist. 2023 OASIS Award for Best Screenplay.

Ben Masters on Deep in the Heart 2: Texas Rivers, Ethan Hawke & His Hail Mary

Ben Masters sat in the back of a packed house with a full orchestra and called it peak living. Then he told Paul Salfen what he wants Texas to do with its rivers.

AMFM Magazine Managing Editor Paul Salfen talks with the Fin & Fur Films director about Deep in the Heart 2: Texas Rivers, the tighter water-policy sequel to his 2022 hit Deep in the Heart. Native Texan Ethan Hawke narrates this one. Matthew McConaughey narrated the first. Masters walks through Kickstarter beginnings, the Unbranded Mexico-to-Canada ride that became his Hail Mary, the mountain-lion policy the first film helped move, and the question this sequel puts to the audience: how do we want to manage the rivers that make this place possible?

“We could do this for the rest of our lives, and it would be a good thing to do for Texas.” — Ben Masters

In Texas theaters now (opened September 25, 2026).

Streaming October 27 on Apple TV and Prime Video.

Adam Egypt Mortimer sits down with AMFM Magazine Managing Editor Paul Salfen after the Fantastic Fest 2026 world premiere of Pathetic Fallacy — a 35mm psychedelic horror-musical about love, death, and the price of bringing someone back.

Mortimer calls it a dark, romantic, psychedelic musical odyssey. Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi stars as Asher opposite Jessica Rothe as Iris. Natasha Lyonne voices a Faustian spider. Johnny Jewel scores it. People get axed up. The romance, Mortimer says, was the part that actually mattered.

In this exclusive AMFM conversation he talks Nicolas Roeg and rock-star souls (Bowie, Jagger, Garfunkel), why Kid Cudi wanted to put his feelings into horror, the extra pressure of a fourth feature after Blue Velvet, and the five-year Hail Mary it takes to stand in a room when the movie has finally gotten made.

His advice to new filmmakers: be as insane as this. We don’t want boring shit. We want sick shit.
Pathetic Fallacy (2026)

Starring Scott Mescudi, Jessica Rothe, Travis Fimmel, Natasha Lyonne

Animal coordinator Andrew Simpson has the job other people invent at ten. Then David Ayer’s Heart of the Beast showed up with Brad Pitt, a combat German Shepherd named Odin, and New Zealand standing in for Alaska.
In this AMFM exclusive, Managing Editor Paul Salfen talks to Simpson about the surreal set days, why listening is the rare half of animal work, the Hail Mary that sent 13 wolves to Siberia at minus 60, and why he is not sure a real animal will still have a place in cinema five years from now.
Heart of the Beast — in theaters now from Paramount Pictures.

Brad Pitt is James Belmont. Odin is played by Uber and his sons. David Ayer directs. Cameron Alexander wrote the script.
“No animals were harmed. It’s make-believe. If we do our job correctly, that’s the illusion — danger around every single corner.”
Watch the conversation. Then go see the movie.
